Tanya Sheka

I think of running as a way of communicating with my ancestors and the youth of my people. When I run I feel that I am honoring the people whom I have loved and lost, especially my mother and father. Although, I knew my maternal grandparents for such a short time and didn't know my paternal grandparents, I feel that I was blessed with their running abilities. I have been told that my ancestors from both sides of my familywere great runners. It is my desire to carry on this tradition for my own children to see, as well as the youth of Zuni. It is also my greatest wish that they will follow my example and continue the Zuni tradition of great running.

I started running in 1989 and now running has become a big part of my life. Ever since I first experienced the sense of being totally free and strong as the wind I was hooked! Never did I imagine though, that running would take me to the places and experiences that it has. Running has given me many material rewards but most importantly it has taught me to plan specific goals, self-discipline, perserverence, and the ability to believe in myself as a runner and as a person. When I think about it, these are all the things my mother also taught me to believe in. That's probably why I feel her presence so closely when I run.

I thank the Lord for giving me the opportunity to be an instrument of his glory. It is through his will, not mine that I have experienced the victories with which I have been blessed . Elahkwah!
